Off the stage

I've been semi-sickly since Wednesday; but that hasn't prevented things from going quite well, otherwise. Wednesday itself was Laurie's birthday, which was celebrated with a gathering at The Works. I survived another gift-buying occasion, so all is good.

Although I was a bit sluggish by Friday, I still made it to Babylon with Nick and Flett, to see DJ Signify with Sixtoo. That was a very cool show. The two DJs performed together, with assistance from two instrumentalists. The setlist was weighted towards Sixtoo's material and he took a few turns on vocals, so he was certainly the frontman. I've seen him open in the past and not say a word, so it was good to see him easily hold up to the focus.

The concert had to overcome some notable snags, including disconnected wires, failed equipment, and a broken bass string. The improvised recovery from those situations was actually a highlight of the performance, though.

Saturday night was a very different concert, as Julie Doiron was playing at Zaphod's. It seemed that she was going to refrain from her famously wandering stage chatter this time; but luckily, she brought it out for a strong finish, that saw her break the club curfew by a wide margin. She mixed it up between acoustic and electric guitar this time. At times, she was assisted with electric backup to her acoustic, which worked extremely well.

The weekend was also notable because Laurie's friend Laura was visiting and staying with us, which was also fun.

So, it wasn't quite the lazy weekend that might have aided my recovery; but it was certainly a good one.

J.
