Back in town

The remainder of the vacation went quite well. After doing most of the obvious touristy things during last year's visit, I guess that we just spent more of this trip relaxing.

The weather was better than I would have counted on, with a bit of rain in the middle of the week being made up for by two beautiful weekends. Highlights included visiting Jackie and Darryn (with a trip to the beach, steak supper, and sushi lunch); a trip to Lunenburg with my aunt Ena and cousin Katrina (scallops for lunch); a night camping at Terrence Bay with my brother and his cronies (more steak); dinner at McKelvies (more scallops); and doing the Harbour Hopper cruise with Liam and Vronique.

Apart from that, I also got in the lake several times and played a crapload of cards--good times, all around.

Going back to work is always a drag, although, despite a couple of good arguments with the boss, this week has been pretty decent. What I'm coding at the moment is reasonably enjoyable, albeit a distant second to swimming in the lake and trying to eat the province out of scallops.

After a quiet stretch for concerts (only Magnolia Electric Co. in the eight weeks since Bluesfest wrapped up), things are picking up again. The current schedule is:

  • Sept. 10: Controller.Controller (Zaphod's, Ottawa)
  • Sept. 13: Brother Ali (Barrymore's, Ottawa)
  • Sept. 17: The White Stripes (Bell Centre, Montreal)
  • Sept. 18: Sigur Ros (Bronson Centre, Ottawa)
  • Sept. 30: Metric (Capital Music Hall, Ottawa)
  • Oct. 10: New Pornographers (La Tulipe, Montreal)
  • Oct. 14: Judas Priest/Anthrax (Corel Centre, Ottawa)
  • Oct. 20: Broken Social Scene (Capital Music Hall, Ottawa)

Sigur Ros is more of a Laurie show but I'm psyched for the others. Actually, Metric is more of a Laurie band, too, but I'm keen on the openers: The Lovely Feathers, who I enjoyed when I saw them in Montreal, and Jason Collett, who I could have seen at Bluesfest, if I had gotten in motion a little quicker.

Speaking of bands I missed at Bluesfest, I'm going to miss Cuff the Duke for what I believe is the third time this year, as they'll be here when I'm in Montreal. That's a shame, as their new album is great. (I was originally a little worried, given the mixed reviews, but it turned out to be a fantastic release.)

I'm having to pass on a few other shows that I would have liked to see, including The Kills last night in Montreal and the latest Rollins spoken word tour, which again passes no closer than Toronto. Time and money occasionally prove to be limiting factors. If I could pull off one concert right now, it'd be the Dirty Three; but I'd have to hit Chicago or Boston, which seems like a long shot.

With the line-up that I already have in the works (and a couple more possibilities lined up), it certainly should be a good stretch, though.

J.
